There were two places to visit on my bucket list: Berlin and Australia. Australia is no longer on the list.
Thanks to a very generous offer from a friend, I spent just over two weeks in Australia in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Melbourne. Yes, I really did go to Melbourne three times, although two don’t really count as it was catching connecting flights at their airport. I also attended two Supanova conventions>> which were fabulous fun.
Below is the beginning of the recap of my Aussie adventures with images. First … flying.
NOVEMBER 5, 2012 – MONDAY – flight from DFW to LA because we’re taking the Airbus A380 aircraft>> to Australia which needs a big runway. Hang out in Admiral’s club waiting for LA to Melbourne flight. Am gifted socks because when you get on a plane for a 15+ hour flight, you change into socks. Busness class loads the A380 from one story up because we are on the 2nd floor(!) of the airplane(!) which incidentally has more square footage than my house. Seriously.
Seats are wide, can lie flat, and have backs like space pods.
They give you a choice of orange juice (me) or champagne (not me). You fill out your breakfast order and hang it on your seat to be picked up later like at a hotel. You also get an amenities bag with eye mask, tooth brush and tooth paste and 3 kinds of lotion. And pajamas. Seriously.
I use the flight path to keep track of the new time zone I’m going to enter as I watch an appropriate movie>> for my destination. I also finish a book, play a game, and watch another movie. Do get around 5 hours of sleep, because my chair-bed, while narrow, is still flat like a bed and not leaned back like a chair.
NOVEMBER 6, 2012 – TUESDAY – happens sometime over the Pacific Ocean. I slept through part of it.
NOVEMBER 7, 2012 – WEDNESDAY – arrive in Melbourne. Catch plane to Brisbane. Have now been traveling for almost 24 hours and have concluded time travel as it is still Tuesday in the time zone I originated from.
Next post … Brisbane
